Ulrika’s urban garden

How do you create a cosy and inviting atmosphere on a balcony or small terrace? We recently visited our founder and designer Ulrika on a sunny day – to get her best ideas for a small outdoor space.

“With our kids, now  young adults and out of the house, me and my husband just moved in to an apartment in the city - swapping our garden for small terraces. A small space can be a challenge but at the same time a blessing since it doesn’t take that much to decorate and make it cosy. Since I’m all into textiles :), of course I start off by adding cushions to all seating areas to create a relaxed and comfy atmosphere.”

“I think green colours go very well with plants and flowers, as long as the green colours are on the warm side. Otherwise they can clash with the greenery. I do love our classic stripes in in the deck chairs! And I think green is such a soft and welcoming colour!”

“I like to place my pots and plants in groups rather than scattering them all over, this gives a bigger green impact. I also place plants on several height levels, to make it more dynamic and interesting. For this I use low benches, pedestals and similar. I also like to mix in old urns, bottles and vases with interesting shapes and glazes to create a nice mix.”

“Even though I really like to grow my own herbs, veggies and flowers, I try to create a base of evergreens to frame and ground my outdoor space. It's rewarding not to have to redo everything every year, and last but not least to have a green room to look out at all year round.”

“Although I’m a true colour lover, I also think that earthy neutrals work very well in outdoor spaces. They make all plants and greens stand out , just creating a calm backdrop. And not to forget, lanterns in different shapes and sizes, you really can’t have too many….”
